Don Schlitz, født og opvokset i North Carolina flyttede i 1973 til Nashville, hvor han slog sig ned som sangskriver og den første af hans sange, der blev indspillet, "The Gambler" indbragte ham en Grammy,samt CMA's award for Song of the Year.
Don Schlitz har haft stor betydning for store navne som Kenny Rogers, Randy Travis, The Judds, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Tanya Tucker, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Allison Kraus og mange flere.
